SUMMARY:Judy Cohen to present as USI Edward D. and Regina Rechnic Holocaust Series speaker
DESCRIPTION:The University of Southern Indiana will host the third annual Edward D. and Regina Rechnic Holocaust Series at 7 p.m. Thursday\, January 23\, 2025\, in the Performance Center\, located on the USI campus. The 2025 speaker is Judy Cohen\, former Chief Acquisitions Curator at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. The presentation is open to the public at no charge. \nCohen’s presentation\, “My Dearest One: A Wife’s Final Goodbye\,” will explore how newly discovered artifacts and documents deepen understanding of the Holocaust. It will highlight a one-of-a-kind letter written at Auschwitz moments before a woman was murdered\, along with other unique archival materials that illuminate the experiences of her husband and child. \nAs the former Chief Acquisitions Curator at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum\, Cohen was instrumental in preserving Holocaust history through the Museum’s extensive collections. A graduate of Harvard University with a master’s degree from Brandeis\, she curated numerous web exhibits and authored works that examined distinct facets of Holocaust documentation\, including Memento Mori: Photographs from the Grave\, Three Approaches to Exploring the Höcker Album and Jewish Ghetto Photographers. Her research brought critical insight into the lives captured by Jewish photographers and the personal artifacts that reflected life in Europe before and during the Holocaust. \nCohen’s work has been crucial in helping descendants of Holocaust survivors preserve their family histories. Her dedication ensured these artifacts remained safeguarded and accessible\, enriching public understanding of the Holocaust through deeply personal and often previously unseen materials. \nThis series is made possible by the USI Foundation through the Edward D. and Regina Rechnic Speaker Series Endowment. The endowment was established by the late Irene C. Rechnic and honors her parents’ struggle to survive the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during WWII\, where 960\,000 Jews were executed. \nFor questions on the presentation\, contact the College of Liberal Arts at 812-464-1855.

Without their families\, they find kinship in each other and form bonds that give them hope for the future. https://www.pbs.org/show/windermere-children/ \nViewing Guide PDF | Viewing Guide .doc \nBlind Love: A Holocaust Journey through Poland with Man’s Best Friend\nThe film follows the journey of 6 blind Israelis to Poland\, where\, with the help of their beloved guide dogs\, they encounter the difficult history of the Holocaust. The “blind love” between owner and dog\, is contrasted to the “blind hate” of Nazi Germany they encounter on their journey. \nHarbor From the Holocaust\nIn a Holocaust story of hope\, 20\,000 Jews find refuge in Shanghai during World War II. The film explores the relationship of the refugees and their host city\, and the survivors who carried on the traditions that would have been consigned to oblivion. https://www.pbs.org/show/harbor-holocaust/ \nI Dance For The Angel of Death-The Dr. Edith Eger Story\nEdie recounts her remarkable story of survival as a prisoner at Auschwitz and her struggles with survivor’s guilt. Edie and her husband came to the U.S. in 1949\, and she would later go on to receive a psychology degree from the University of Texas. In the film\, Edie examines how her ongoing work with patients has helped her grow and heal. \nViewing Guide PDF | Viewing Guide .doc \nHoly Silence\n“Holy Silence\,” a documentary film from Emmy-nominated director Steven Pressman\, takes a fresh look at a topic that has sparked controversy for decades. During the years leading up to World War II\, what was the Vatican’s reaction to the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany? And after the war began\, how did the pope respond to the horrors of the Holocaust? \nThis program has been brought to you by WNIN and CYPRESS\, the Committee to Promote Respect in Schools. CYPRESS is proud to sponsor programs that prompt discussions and deeper thinking both at home and in the classroom. SUMMARY:2021 Belfer National Conference for EducatorsSession III
DESCRIPTION:Registration for the 2021 Belfer Conference is now open! \nThe Conference is free to attend and will be held virtually in three different sessions. \nSession I: Wednesday\, July 7–Friday\, July 9\nThe 2021 Belfer National Conference for Educators is free to secondary school and community college faculty interested in teaching about the Holocaust using resources from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. \nSession II: Wednesday\, July 28–Friday\, July 30\nBelfer Alumni Next Steps National Conference for Educators is open to Belfer alumni. \nSession III: Monday\, August 2–Tuesday\, August 3\nThe 2021 Belfer National Conference for Holocaust Education Partners is free to school administrators\, curriculum coordinators\, librarians\, curriculum developers\, CHEC partners\, HITE professors\, online curriculum providers\, international Museum partners\, or other Holocaust education partners. \nDue to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the conferences will be virtual events. Virtual event access details will be provided in your email registration confirmation. \nA note from Amy Scharf\, CYPRESS Committee Member and EVSC Educator: \nHello! \nAs a local teacher and member of CYPRESS (the Committee to Promote Respect in Schools)\, I\nwant to encourage you to participate in this summer’s Belfer Conference for Educators\, brought\nto you by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM). \nThe conference has always been free\, but this year’s virtual format means participants pay no\ntravel costs. All you need to do is sign up online at the USHMM Conference link. \nIn 2015\, I had the opportunity to attend the Belfer Conference\, and it was a week I will never\nforget. \nDays were spent learning hands-on strategies to fight hate and discrimination in the classroom.\nEvenings were filled exploring the museum after hours\, meeting teachers from around the\nworld\, and hearing the testimony of a Holocaust survivor. I took away books\, techniques\, and\nideas that I have incorporated into my classroom ever since. This USHMM video from the 2015\nConference gives a sneak peak of the Conference activities. \nAccording to a survey conducted by the non-profit organization Echoes and Reflections\,\nHolocaust education “cultivat[es] more empathetic\, tolerant\, and engaged students.” In a year\nof division and uncertainty\, the Belfer Conference resources are more important than ever. I\nhave already signed up for this summer\, and I urge you to take advantage of this free\nopportunity. I truly believe it will make a difference in your life and the lives of your students. \nSincerely\, \nAmy Scharf\nEnglish Teacher\nCYPRESS Board Member

SUMMARY:Eva A-7063 Documentary Viewing & Discussion at North Park Library
DESCRIPTION:For Holocaust Remembrance Month\, EVPL North Park will be showing Eva: A-7063\, a documentary on survivor/activist Eva Mozes Kor\, on April 4\, 2020\, at North Park Library. CYPRESS will be leading a discussion following the film. \nTaken from her home at the age of five\, Eva and her twin sister were their family’s only survivors\, and only then kept alive for the experiments of Auschwitz’ “Angel of Death\,” Josepf Mengele. Years after the liberation of Auschwitz\, Eva Mozes married a man named Michael Kor and settled down across the world in Terre Haute\, Indiana. She contacted former survivors and founded a group named CANDLES\, building a museum in Terre Haute\, campaigning in Washington DC\, and returning once a year to Auschwitz. Although not without controversy\, Eva’s message of hope\, courage\, and forgiveness touched thousands of lives she encountered. We are honoring Mrs. Kor and her work with a discussion about the film and her life after the screening\, facilitated by members of CYPRESS.

SUMMARY:A New Generation Remembers: A Unique Holocaust Exhibit on display at TABI
DESCRIPTION:The Committee to Promote Respect in Schools (CYPRESS) invites you to join in a powerful\, creative learning experience around the Holocaust. \nCYPRESS\, in partnership with Temple Adath B’nai Israel (TABI)\, is hosting an exhibit of Holocaust Murals created by students designed to ensure memories of the Holocaust are preserved in art. \nThe exhibit is called “A New Generation Remembers: A Unique Holocaust Exhibit.” The mural collection is part of a program for gifted middle and high school students from Kentucky.
